Murder charges filed in deaths of NE Ohio couple

NEW FRANKLIN, Ohio (AP) — An 18-year-old man has been charged in the deaths of a prominent attorney and his wife, who were beaten with a sledgehammer at their northeast Ohio home.

Two counts each of aggravated murder, aggravated robbery and aggravated burglary and one count of grand theft were filed Thursday against Shawn Ford Jr. of Akron. He was dating the couple’s teenage daughter.

He was jailed in adjacent Portage County on an unrelated obstructing justice charge. Court records listed no attorney for Ford.

Autopsies showed 56-year-old Jeffrey Schobert of New Franklin and his 59-year-old wife, Margaret, died of head wounds.

The Akron Beacon Journal ( ) reports authorities are investigating whether the earlier assault of their daughter could be related. Police say the 24-year-old man jailed in that attack isn’t suspected in the slayings.
