Pa. prisons chief knew slain Colorado counterpart

NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania Secretary of Corrections John Wetzel says he was personal friends with slain Colorado Corrections Director Tom Clements who, Wetzel says, “was a champion of doing the right thing.”

WWNW radio ( ) reports that Wetzel spoke about Clements Thursday night at a criminal justice symposium at Westminster College in New Wilmington. The radio station is run by the private college in northwestern Pennsylvania.

Wetzel says Clements’ slaying hit home not just because they performed the same job in different states, but because they were personal friends.

Wetzel says the best way to honor his slain friend is “to keep doing the right thing.”

Wetzel’s remarks came a few hours before Colorado authorities arrested a suspect in the slaying of Clements, who was shot when he answered the door of his home last month.
