Milan’s Box Office Picks and New On DVD

NOW PLAYING:

“Evil Dead”

Egregiously oversold by fanboys prior to its release, this efficiently made, reasonably stylish reboot of Sam Raimi’s deliriously demented 1983 original can’t help but seem mildly disappointing. Plus, the total humorlessness of the enterprise makes it feel a lot longer than it actually is. Anyone who’s hyped this as the “goriest horror movie ever made” clearly hasn’t seen a lot of “The Walking Dead.” (C+)

NEW ON DVD:

“Hyde Park on Hudson”

Bill Murray makes a surprisingly convincing F.D.R. in a fanciful account of the former U.S. president’s longtime secret affair with a distant cousin (nicely played by Laura Linney). Also very good is Olivia Williams as the redoubtable Eleanor. If the film errs slightly on the side of decorousness, it’s still a very pleasant 90 minutes. (B)
