A Liberty man received a surprise Sunday morning when he discovered five baby squirrels tied together by their tails in his front yard in a bizarre case of animal cruelty.

Tom Scharrer of Shannon Road noticed the squirrels underneath his car at around 8:30 a.m.

He and a friend had to jack the car up to reach the squirrels and that’s when they noticed that someone had tied the baby squirrels together by their tails using pieces of cloth and a plastic grocery bag.

Liberty Police responded and were able to untangle the sqirrels.

“Like, if they were gonna run to you, three were running to you, and the two were being dragged behind,” said Scharrer.  “Their feet were going backwards.  It was crazy.  And, they had all this stuff all tied up in a whole ball.  That’s all you could see.  It was crazy.”

“We used scissors, nail clippers, to cut away the plastic.  Took us about a half an hour,” added Liberty Police Officer Pete DeAngelo.

A few of the squirrels suffered minor bleeding on their tails.  The person or people responsible could face cruelty to animal charges.
