As Israel turns 65, Youngstown celebrated on Sunday at the Jewish Community Center.

The celebration of Israel’s Independence Day was a family-friendly event complete with an opening ceremony and Children’s flag parade.

Families from the Mahoning Valley enjoyed Israeli culture including food, dancing, activities and live music during the celebration.

Celebrations for the independence occurred in communities throughout the country.

“We celebrate the miracle that is the state, we celebrate the advances that the state of Israel has made over the past 65 years,” said  Bonnie Deutschburdman of the Youngstown Area Jewish Federation. “65 years young and it’s one of the most technologically, culturally and otehrwise advanced countries in the world.”

The actual day fell last Monday on the Jewish Calendar.
