The former Austintown Middle School property on Mahoning Avenue was sold to a real estate company for $2.5 million.
Austintown trustee Jim Davis said on Wednesday the nearly 15-acre property was sold to Landmark Realty. Davis said Landmark is known for handling Kohl’s department stores real estate.
The school went up for sale at an auction in September 2010 with a $2 million starting price but no one bid on the property. The property was deemed safe before the bid after soil contamination issues. However, the building still has asbestos inside.
The school was built as the township high school in 1916. It became the middle school until 2007 when students were relocated to the new location on Raccoon Road.
The district is in the midst of a major construction project that will locate two elementary schools, an intermediate school, the middle school and high school on the same campus.
