Seven new firefighters were sworn in Wednesday morning at the Youngstown Fire Department: Ryan Cook, Jeff Davis, Josh Grossman, Ben Hendershott, Matt Lucy, Dan McGlone and Aaron Smith.
The men were given their badges and took the oath in front of family and colleagues.
The firefighters were immediately assigned to units with varying assignments.
The additions bring the department back to a staff of 138. Youngstown Fire Chief John O’Neill said the extra firefighters come at a critical time of year.
“That’s been our comfort number for the last couple of years here, and it’s been running really well,” O’Neill said. “It’s really cut the overtime need quite a bit. We have very little overtime, and we have enough people on staff, especially during the summer months.”
Two firefighters, Tim Hrina and Mark Kellerman, also were promoted to lieutenant during the swearing in ceremony.
