Judge rules in Ohio officer’s favor in shooting

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A judge in a wrongful-death lawsuit has ruled that a central Ohio police officer was justified in fatally shooting an armed man who was running away from him.

The Franklin County judge ended the case Wednesday by granting summary judgment to Columbus Officer Frederick Hannah in the lawsuit filed against him by the estate of Edward Hayes, who was killed by the officer in 2008.

The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/14b01Wu ) reports that the 31-year-old Hayes was in a car that officers thought was involved in a drug deal. When police approached, Hayes got out of the car with a gun in his hand, refused commands to drop the weapon and ran.

Hannah said Hayes turned toward him and pointed the gun in the officer’s direction before Hannah shot him once.
