SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — Former state senator Bob Mellow spent years as a power broker in Harrisburg, clout that paid off by having his name adorn public projects in his northeastern Pennsylvania district.
But these days Mellow is serving a federal sentence at a prison camp in South Carolina for conspiracy to commit mail fraud, and now some of those names are coming down.
Lackawanna College and Marywood University said Thursday they’re renaming a theater and athletic center that bear his name. It’s also been removed from a park in Blakely and Keystone College’s Mellow Family Children’s Campus.
The Lackawanna County Democrat faces charges for what prosecutors say were illegal actions related to vendors and contracts at the Pennsylvania Turnpike. He’s accused of pressuring turnpike staff to support him politically and raise campaign funds.
