Work is progressing on Mercer County’s first Utica Shale well as it moves closer to production status.

Halcon Resources is now flaring its Phillips 1-H well on South State line Road in West Salem Township.

It’s a visible sign of the times for drivers on Route 358.

Flaring is a process where natural gas is burned off a newly drilled well to test its production capacity.

Both federal and state environmental agencies regulate the air pollutants released during flaring to maintain air quality standards.
