Ohio inmate charged in slaying of cellmate

CHIILICOTHE, Ohio (AP) — A 21-year-old Ohio prison inmate has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity in the slaying of a cellmate.

Logan Alan Murphy was charged in the strangulation of 34-year-old Michael Ferrara at Ross Correctional Institution in Chillicothe Jan. 11. He entered his plea at an arraignment Tuesday.

The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/16msokJ ) reports that a corrections officer found Murphy sitting on top of the unconscious Ferrara while holding a sheet in the cell they shared.

Ferrara died two days before he was scheduled to be freed after serving a four-year sentence for burglary and other convictions out of Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH’-guh) County. Murphy was serving a two-year sentence for burglary, breaking and entering, and vandalism in Stark County.

Murphy is now charged with aggravated murder.
