Pa. doc jailed until feds can indict on child porn

SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. (AP) — A federal magistrate has ordered a western Pennsylvania optometrist jailed until he can be indicted on child pornography charges.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Cynthia Eddy ordered 53-year-old Mark Beres, of Slippery Rock, detained on a criminal complaint.

Beres has been in custody since shortly after federal agents raided his home last week and allegedly found 500,000 images and 550 videos of children who were either nude or engaged in sex.

Authorities asked that Beres remain in custody while a grand jury reviews the case because he has allegedly acknowledged molesting three boys, ages 3, 7 and 13, on several occasions.

Beres is represented by a federal public defender who has a blanket policy of not speaking to the media.

Authorities have 30 days to obtain a grand jury indictment.
