The three final candidates for the position of president of Youngstown State University will visit the campus in the coming days and students, faculty and staff will have a chance to meet each one.

Open meetings and forums are scheduled Thursday for Dr. Randy Dunn. Dunn is the current president of Murray State University in Kentucky and former superintendent of education in Illinois.

“It did give me a pretty wide range of experience in managing a very large, complex organization with a multi-billion dollar budget,” Dunn said at a reception held in his honor Wednesday night.

Several forums have been scheduled Thursday to allow students, faculty, staff and community members to meet with Dunn and hear his vision for the university.

Students expressed what they want to see in a university president and many said they would like to see someone who puts the students first. Others are concerned with finding someone with a solid plan for the future of YSU.

“I’m definitely looking and hoping they are YSU student oriented,” said sophomore Caroline Standohar. “We are. We are YSU.”

“It’s also important that a university president comes in with a plan,” said Cory Okular, president of YSU Student Government Association. “We can all acknowledge no university is perfect, so there has to be a plan in improving the things that YSU is good at and improving things that need a lot of work.”

Dunn said he has a plan for the university and part of that vision includes establishing political allies in Columbus and Washington.

“You only get success with partnerships and corporation, so the next president of Youngstown State has to be a leader outside of the campus as well as inside and engaging the city,” said U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan, D-Niles. “Engaging the economic development, engaging the urban planning and urban design to make sure you’re all moving forward in the same direction the new leader needs to be a catalyst for that.”

An open forum for faculty, academic chairs, and academic senate leadership to meet Dunn is set for Thursday from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the board meeting room inside Tod Hall.

Other forums are scheduled throughout the day and include:

2:30 to 3:15 p.m., Open Forum with YSU Students hosted by the Student Government Association, Tod Hall, Board Room, First Floor.

3:30 to 4:30 p.m., Open Forum with University Community, Tod Hall, Board Meeting Room, First Floor.
