Another Puerto Rico university official resigns

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — The president of the University of Puerto Rico’s main campus has resigned just days after the presidents of the university’s 10 other campuses did the same.

Friday’s announcement by Ana Guadalupe comes amid a flurry of resignations to protest the governor’s reform of the institution’s board of directors. A new board president was appointed Thursday, and an interim president has been chosen to oversee the island’s largest public university, which includes the campus Guadalupe oversaw.

Gov. Alejandro Garcia Padilla has revamped the university’s board to create new positions and reduce the amount of time members serve. He also recently signed a law to eliminate an $800 fee that had sparked violent protests and led to a drop in enrollment.
