Newton Falls’ rally fell short, losing to Jefferson 7-6 in high school baseball Tuesday evening.
The Tigers had the tying run on third base and winning run at second base with two outs in the bottom of the 7th inning, by Jefferson’s Cole Erdel got a strikeout to end the game.
Jefferson got on the board first with two runs in the top of the 1st inning. Kyle Ashburn singled in one of those runs.
Newton Falls got one back in the bottom of the 2nd inning when Nate Harrah doubled home Jaden Walton to cut the deficit to 2-1.
In the top of the 3rd, Jefferson pushes two more runs across. Joe Piscsalko had an RBI single and Matt Barber had an RBI double to make it a 4-1 Jefferson lead.
Logan Harrah’s RBI single in the bottom of the 5th inning brought the Tigers within 4-2.
Jefferson got that run back when Ethan Pawlowski was hit by a pitch, giving the Falcons a 5-2 advantage.
Newton Falls rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the 6th inning. Jaden Walton’s RBI single made it 5-3. Later, Derek Walton scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 5-4. Nate Harrah’s sacrifice fly tied the game at 5-5.
In the top of the 7th, Jefferson plated two runs to retake the lead.
The Tigers would not quit in the bottom of the 7th. Jaden Walton had another RBI single to make it a 7-6 game. But with the bases loaded, Erdel worked out of the jam with the strikeout to finish the game.
The win pulls Jefferson into a tie with Newton Falls in the All-American Conference, giving them both a share of the league title.
