Officer Funeral Procession Set

Longtime police officer Jerry McCarthy was killed during a police chase with an erratic driver in New Castle.

Thousands are expected to pay their respects to Shenango Township police officer Jerry McCarthy on Wednesday.

A funeral mass will be held Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at St. Vitus Parish in New Castle. Following the mass, the funeral procession will travel from New Castle to Grove City.

The route is as follows:

  • Mill Street
  • Taylor
  • E. Washington
  • Willowbrook Road past the Shenango Township police station
  • Route 422 Eastbound
  • Route 388 Northbound
  • Route 108 Eastbound
  • 79 Northbound
  • Grove City Exit Route 208
  • Route 173 Northbound
  • To Crestview Memorial Cemetery

Grove City officials asked anyone wishing to pay their respects to gather along the route. The procession is expected to go through the area between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Full military honors will be performed by the Pennsylvania State Police at the cemetery.

McCarthy was a husband and father of two sons, one daughter, a step son and a step daughter.

He retired after more than 30 years working at Grove City College in Safety Services. McCarthy was hired in 2011 by the Lawrence County District Attorney’s office as a county detective and as a county humane agent and worked as a part-time patrolman for Shenango Township.

He was killed Thursday during a police chase in New Castle.
