The Warren Police Department promoted two officers Wednesday and one of them will soon be promoted again to chief of police.

During a ceremony Wednesday, Lt. Eric Merkel was promoted to captain and will serve in that capacity until Chief Tim Bowers retires. Also, Sgt. Greg Hosa was promoted to Lieutenant.

A small gathering of family, friends and co-workers gathered for the swearing-in at City Hall.

Merkel performed the best on the civil service test which puts him in line for the chief’s office. Safety Service Director Enzo Cantalemessa said Merkel is a wonderful addition to the top brass of the police department.

“He’s young, he’s bright and he’s enthusiastic,” said Cantalamessa. “We are noticing a lot of retirements that have been happening and the promotions you see here today are kind of indicative of that.”

Merkel will be promoted to chief when Bowers retires in June.
