Hundreds showed up at Yankee Lake Ballroom in Brookfield Wednesday to get a taste of mouth-watering barbecue and many other foods at the 24th Annual Strimbu Memorial Barbecue.
The event is a fundraiser to benefit the Strimbu Memorial Fund. Money raised will be used to continue the work of the late Tom and Nick Strimbu Jr. who spent their lives helping others as well as helping with economic development in the Valley.
The fund awards more than $20,000 in scholarships each year to high school seniors throughout the area. It also helps with local economic development as well as many charitable organizations.
“Nick and Tom Strimbu were noted for whenever you went to their house, you left totally full of food,” said Paul O’Brien, president of the Strimbu Memorial Fund board. “They always had these big barbecues and that’s what led us to having this when Nick Strimbu passed away in 1989.”
Each guest left the event with a bag of Vidalia onions, a tradition started by the Strimbu family.
