A Youngstown man is facing life in prison for killing a 26-year-old man in a shootout on the city’s North Side.

Dejuan Thomas, 31, of Osborn Avenue, was indicted Thursday by a Mahoning County grand jury on aggravated murder and aggravated robbery charges that carry a life-in-prison penalty. Thomas was also charged with having a weapon as a felon.

He is accused of fatally shooting Kristopher Stuart, 26, on April 30 at Stuart’s home in the 2100 block of Elm Street.

Police said Thomas was shot multiple times in the chest and torso and his nephew, Kalonte Carter, 17, was shot in the left arm. Both walked into St. Elizabeth Health Center’s Emergency Room about 20 minutes apart, police said.

Thomas, police said, went into surgery shortly after.

Another man, LaQuawn Hopkins, 35, of S. Schenley Ave., was indicted on a third-degree felony charge of tampering with evidence.

Thomas, according to a search of county records, was convicted in 2001 for carrying a concealed weapon. He was convicted in 2004 and 2005 with felony heroin and drug possession and pleaded guilty to attempted theft in 2009. He was given one year probation for the 2009 offense.

Hopkins, too, has been convicted of drug possession in 2004. He was also convicted in 2009 for having weapons despite being a felon.
