Time Running Out on RG Steel Facility

With no buyer in sight, time is running out on the former RG Steel plant in Warren.

It’s been nine months since Monaca businessman Charles Betters bought the plant at auction for $16 million. An agreement with the bankruptcy court that restricted Betters from scrapping the plant for nine months is expiring at the end of this month. During that nine-month period, he could only sell the plant to someone looking to re-open it.

Betters winterized the facility and an auction was held in March to sell off machinery and other components, but officials haven’t heard from Betters in several weeks.

Trumbull County Commissioner Frank Fuda said whatever becomes of the plant, he sees a future for the site. He said the plant sits on prime real estate with 21 miles of railroad.

“Whether it’s a steel mill or some other industry, look to something to happen there pretty quickly,” said Fuda. “We are thinking more than one industry, but probably many industries.”

Calls made to Charles Betters were not immediately returned.
