South Range Approves Cullen & Matisi

South Range has hired a pair of veteran coaches to take over the Raiders’ basketball programs.

Former Lowellville Head Coach Tony Matisi was named varsity girls basketball coach, while former Canfield  Head Coach John Cullen was hired to take over the boys program.  Both were officially approved at a Board meeting on Friday morning.

South Range Superintendent Dennis Dunham was thrilled to add two of the most successful coaches aboard to lead the Raiders programs.

“We are very pleased to hired two highly qualified, experienced coaches to guide our boys and girls basketball program,”  he said.  “In our past searches, we were looking for individuals that teach and coach basketball, but that also guide our students on the court in terms of their positive leadership, dirsction and guidence,” said Dunham.

Matisi led Lowellville to District Titles in seven of the last ten years, including each of the last five years.  The Rockets finished with a record of 20-4 last season.  He has 350 wins during his storied coaching career.

Meanwhile, Cullen has spent the last three seasons as the Director of Basketball Operations with the Youngstown State Women’s Basketball program.  He spent 28 years as head coach at Canfield, compiling a record of 433-186 with the Cardinals.  That includes thirteen league championships in both the Mahoning Valley Conference and the All- American Conference. The Cardinals won 16 sectional championships and 5 district championships in this time period. He had a league record of 240 wins and 82 losses during his career at Canfield.  Prior to his time at Canfield, he spent eights years at Brookfield, and one year at Badger.   His overall record in coaching is 472-228.  Cullen now has 41 players or former assistants that have become head coaches in basketball and other sports.
