Mercer Food Bank Wins Walmart Grant

The Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County has won a $45,000 grant as part of Walmart’s national Fighting Hunger Together initiative.

The Sharon-based food bank placed seventh out of more than 300 eligible Feeding America partner agencies and received 3,547 votes. Walmart is giving away $3 million in grants as part of the initiative for the most innovative and effective programs that help alleviate child hunger.

The Community Food Warehouse of Mercer County will use the money to support its Backpack Program, which will operate in five school districts in the 2013-14 academic year.

Last year, Second Harvest Food Bank of the Mahoning Valley shared a $1 million prize with Catholic Charities Regional Agency and Trumbull Mobile Meals in Walmart’s contest.
