Harrisburg paper endorses mayor’s foe

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — The Harrisburg region’s newspaper is endorsing one of Harrisburg Mayor Linda Thompson’s re-election challengers.

In an editorial Friday, The Patriot-News threw its support behind bookstore owner Eric Papenfuse in a four-way primary for the Democratic nomination.

The paper says Papenfuse’s business has helped launch a renaissance in a troubled section of the financially troubled state capital and that he offers a coherent vision for the city’s future.

The newspaper acknowledges Thompson’s accomplishments but calls her “a polarizing figure” who is prone to public missteps and tends to blame others for every problem. It says Thompson’s political brand is too damaged for her to function as the unifying figure that the region needs.

The other candidates are city Controller Dan Miller and community activist Lewis Butts.
