Pennsylvania State Police confirmed that a former Mahoning County Sheriff’s deputy shot his wife then turned the gun on himself.
According to police reports, Caroline Lupo, 50, called 911 the night of May 12 and told police she and her husband, Joseph Lupo, 50, were involved in a domestic argument. She said her husband had obtained a handgun, shot her three times and then shot himself.
The report also stated that police “erroneously” reported that Joseph Lupo died that night, however, he was admitted into St. Elizabeth Health Center and died at 3:25 a.m. May 16, four days after the shooting.
The report confirms Joseph Lupo shot Caroline Lupo in the stomach and leg with a .45-caliber gun before shooting himself in the head inside the couple’s W. Main Street duplex in Hillsville, Pa.
Caroline Lupo continues to recover from her injuries at St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Joseph Lupo worked as a deputy from 1992 to 2005 when he left the department on disability.
