Ursuline Wins Pitchers Dual


Ursuline edged Liberty, 1-0, behind Makayla Shore’s five-hitter with nine strikeouts in the Division III Sectional Finals on Friday.

The Irish scored in the top of the fifth inning when Macey Gunther plated on an errant throw with the bases loaded. Macey Gunther and Madeline Christoff each doubled for the Irish.

Liberty pitcher Megan Gatta suffered the loss, despite allowing just three hits in 5 2/3 innings, allowing one unearned run.

The Leopards threatened in the top of 7th with two outs when Raven Johnson and Amy Mikulich reached on infield singles. Kimmy Cordy blooped a single to left to load the bases before Makayla Shore recorded the final out of the game.

Ursuline, which improves to 18-8 overall, will play in the Division III South Range District Semi-finals against the winner of Girard/Newton Falls next Thursday at 6 p.m. at South Range High School.

The Leopards drop to 5-15 on the season.
