The Legal Creative is a nonprofit organization founded by Denise Bayer and Brooke Shorrab.
A fundraiser held last week at Carmella’s Cafe in Boardman featuring celebrity bartenders, including WYTV news anchor Stan Boney, helped the organization raise enough money to apply for its 501(c) 3 status and cover its start-up costs.
The Legal Creative aims to provide legal, educational and business services to the local arts community. Bayer compared it to a “law school for artists.”
She said the organization is needed because the local arts community is growing and becoming more economically viable. Bayer said one thing she has noticed in her private practice is that a lot of her arts clients have a lot of misconceptions about the law as it relates to the arts business.
“We want to empower artists to maximize their earning potential, and marketing and business savvy. We want to help them understand the law is not their enemy and they should use it to their advantage,” Shorrab said.
She said The Legal Creative does not offer legal advice, but makes referrals to local attorneys with expertise in the particular area a client needs. She said eventually, the organization would like to offer seminars on legal issues such as copyrights and intellectual property.
