Lady Cards Softball Latest Success Story for Canfield

No high school in the Valley has found more success this year in girls sports than Canfield. The senior class has already racked up four District Titles, and the softball team isn’t done yet. The Lady Cards are now just two wins away from the State Tournament.

“Ever since I’ve been here, we’ve lived through the Jenna Modic, Erin Gabriel (from Poland) reign,” said Kayley Keller. “So, we were always like, oh yeah, we’re going to come out and play hard against Poland, and this year we worked really, really hard, and it was awesome.”

Canfield’s win over Poland marked the school’s 4th district championship in girls sports this year. And those experiences in volleyball, softball, and basketball helped the softball team earn its first district crown since its state championship run in 2008.

Keller, a senior, continued, “Girls sports, we’re pretty much undermined sometimes, and we work really hard and put in a lot of time and effort and it’s just good to get recognition and show that hard work pays off.”

“I hope that winning those district titles this year leaves us with a name that will last for another decade,” said senior Abby Baker. “Two decades even, because when you think of the 2008 team, you always think of they won districts and they won state, and that’s just how you think of it. So I hope that’s the same with us.”

And the success has put girl power at an all-time high in the hallways at Canfield.

“Now that the boys are done, they have that much more hope in us that we go even farther,” continued Baker. “And it’s a fun little game that we have in school.”

“There’s always going to be competition between girls and boys, but I think we’re all just working for the same goal,” added Rachel Tinkey, a sophomore. “Just trying to get better and improve every day, working for district championships and hopefully get to go farther this year.”

Canfield will play Navarre Fairless on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. at The University of Akron.
