Man Drowns in Slippery Rock Creek

A Butler, Pa., man drowned Wednesday evening while swimming with friends in Slippery Rock Creek below Kennedy Mills Bridge in Lawrence County.

According to the New Castle borough of the Pennsylvania State Police, Mazzarney Kiyham Sanford, 22, was swimming with friends about 6:20 p.m. when he began having difficulty and went under water. His friends and other bystanders tried to assist him, but he drowned and his body was recovered about 90 minutes later.

He was taken to Jameson Hospital in New Castle, where he was pronounced dead.

Emergency personnel from New Castle, Slippery Rock Township, Scott Township, Shenango Township, Noga Ambulance and Pennsylvania State Police assisted at the scene.
