A Warren mother is facing charges for passing out early Thursday from drinking with her car running at a gas station while her two small children were inside the car.
Kayla M. Pennell, 24, of Wick St. S.E., was arrested on charges of endangering children and for refusing to take a drunk driving test at about 1 a.m. Thursday.Police found her two daughters, ages 2 and 3, in the backseat. Their great-grandmother picked them up from the Pit Stop on Youngstown Road S.E.
Reports said one witness told police they saw Pennell passed out with her car running in park next to a gas pump at the Pit Stop. They said they reached into the car and turned the car off.
Officers noted “a very strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting” from Pennell, reports said. She was sleeping when police arrived and struggled exiting the vehicle and walking, reports said.
Reports said she refused an alcohol test.
Pennell, according to court records, was charged in January 2012 with endangering children. The charge was eventually dismissed. She also was convicted in June for refusing to take an alcohol test stemming from a Jan. 24, 2012 incident.
She was sentenced to attend a 72-hour alcohol treatment program in lieu of a three-day jail sentence.
