Proposed Pa. car club out of gas after sale

KUNKLETOWN, Pa. (AP) — A proposed country club for luxury car owners is out of gas after the 354-acre property in eastern Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains was sold to preservationists and added to state game lands.

The proposed Alpine Motorsports Club would have featured a 2.8-mile road course designed to handle speeds of 150 mph or more. Opponents objected to its location on the forested north slope of Blue Mountain, close to the Appalachian Trail and pristine wetlands.

But the club won a string of court battles over the years and seemed on track to open.

The Pocono Record (http://bit.ly/11gSKBb ) reports that a coalition of environmental and preservation groups recently bought the land for $3.8 million, and the state Game Commission added the tract to its holdings.
