Coroner: No cause of death for boy in Ohio woods

CINCINNATI (AP) — Ohio police say a mother has told them a 1-year-old boy whose body was found in the woods had suffered from pneumonia.

A coroner says the cause of the boy’s death remains uncertain. Highland County coroner Dr. Jeff Beery (BIHR’-ee) says initial examination doesn’t show any obvious reasons for the death. He says X-rays don’t indicate any broken bones or other major trauma to the boy’s body.

Hillsboro police Chief Nick Thompson says 26-year-old Whitney Johnson told investigators Garin Niehaus (NEE’-hows) died from illness. Thompson says police don’t have other details.

Johnson and 25-year-old Nathan Ritze on Monday agreed to return to Ohio from Richmond, Ky. They’re each charged with abuse of a corpse and evidence tampering. They’re in police custody and can’t be contacted for comment.
