The 2013 Ursuline baseball team has had quite a year, from winning 17 straight ball games, to making it to the state tournament for the first time in six years, but the journey is far from over.
“Their goal was always to get to Columbus, and I think if we would have fell short this year, they would have been really disappointed,” said head coach Sean Durkin.
“Coming in, seeing the group that we were going to have as seniors, we’ve been talking about it a long time, and it’s just great to finally have the opportunity. We’re excited about it,” stated Ryan Strollo.
These seniors didn’t need much motivation. After the pain of losing in the Regionals the past two years, they have finally got the monkey off their back and will take on Wheelersburgh in the State Semis.
“That wasn’t a good feeling, so it’s like a sense of relief that we finally got here. And now we have the opportunity to finally fulfill what every kid in Ohio wants to do and that’s be in that Ohio State Championship game,” Harry Finelli said.
“After every regional game, we’d lose, and we had to wait another 12 months to get back to this point, and I think this year it’s special because we put in all the hard work in the off-season, more than ever because it’s our last year,” stated Sam Donko.
Playing the defending State Champs may be a cause for concern for some but not this Irish team who believes, come Thursday, they’re the team to beat.
“I don’t think we’re the underdog at all. I think maybe just because they’ve been there four years in a row, they say we’re underdogs, but I think we’re the better team, and I think that we should probably come out with a win,” Donko said.
“Playing the State Champs from a year before, it’s like, well, they know what they did last year, how to do it, so if we beat them, maybe we have something going in our favor by playing them the first game,” stated Finelli.
“I think if there’s any team to go up against them, we’re the team. We’re ready,” Donko stated.
“Yeah we did. We’re staying till Saturday,” said Donko.
