2 ex-Philly officers charged in dealer robberies

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Federal prosecutors say a second former Philadelphia police officer has been charged in the alleged robbery of suspected drug dealers while on duty.

The U.S. Attorney’s office says a new indictment unsealed Tuesday charges 27-year-old Sydemy Joanis along with 23-year-old Jonathan Garcia with conspiracy, robbery, attempted robbery and firearms crimes.

Authorities allege that they enlisted another person to buy drugs, then made arrests during phony traffic stops and stole money they recovered between December 2009 and June2012.

Garcia was fired last year, and a police spokesman says Joanis was dismissed at the end of March following an internal investigation.

Garcia’s attorney said the superseding indictment came as no surprise but declined further comment. A listed number for Joanis couldn’t be found and it was unclear whether he had an attorney.
