Ex-Calif. Rep. Cunningham finishes prison term

SAN DIEGO (AP) — The Federal Bureau of Prisons says former Congressman Randy “Duke” Cunningham has completed his prison sentence for accepting $2.4 million in bribes from defense contractors.

Spokesman Chris Burke says the 71-year-old was released from home confinement Tuesday. He declined to say where or elaborate on the circumstances, citing privacy and safety concerns.

The former Navy flying ace during the Vietnam War was sentenced to more than eight years in prison, one of the longest terms ever given to a member of Congress. He had been under house arrest since February.

The eight-term lawmaker from San Diego pleaded guilty to accepting bribes that included a luxury house, yacht, travel and antiques.
