Philly zoo awaits arrival of new female gorilla

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Zoo will soon be home to a new gorilla. says ( Kira, a 13-year-old female western lowland gorilla, is expected to arrive in a few weeks from the Franklin Park Zoo in Boston. She’s the first gorilla ever born there.

She will be paired with Jabari, one of the three male gorillas at the Philadelphia Zoo.

The hope is that she’ll be the gorilla of his dreams — and they’ll become mates.

Jabari is 28 years old and came from the St. Louis Zoo in 2004. He was born at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago.

Kira’s move stems from a recommendation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ gorilla survival plan, a national program designed to maintain a genetically diverse and demographically stable captive gorilla population.
