Allegations of sex, drugs roil Baltimore jail

BALTIMORE (AP) — Allegations of sex, drugs and access to contraband cellphones are roiling a downtown Baltimore jail.

The unfolding scandal emerged with an indictment in April charging 25 inmates, corrections officers and outside suppliers with a contraband conspiracy scandal.

The indictment alleges that one inmate at the jail impregnated four female corrections officers, one woman twice. Prosecutors say the guards smuggled drugs and cellphones inside the jail that would be either used or sold by incarcerated members of the Black Guerilla Family gang.

The scandal’s had continuing ripple effects. State lawmakers are holding a hearing Thursday to discuss problems at the jail, the state prison director has moved his office there to increase oversight and Gov. Martin O’Malley last week announced the creation of a task force to address corruption.
