Ohio teen pleads insanity in sledgehammer slayings

AKRON, Ohio (AP) — An 18-year-old Ohio man charged in the sledgehammer slayings of a prominent couple has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.

An attorney for Shawn Eric Ford Jr. filed the plea Tuesday in Summit County Common Pleas Court in Akron.

The Akron Beacon Journal (http://bit.ly/180YzI8 ) reports that Ford’s attorneys told a judge that he “has a history of mental health care and treatment,” but they did not elaborate.

The judge told the attorneys he would grant their request for a competency and insanity evaluation.

Ford faces capital murder charges in the April slayings of Jeffrey and Margaret Schobert in their home in New Franklin, near Akron. He’s also charged in an earlier assault of the couple’s teenage daughter.

A 14-year-old boy is also being held in the slayings.
