Corbett aide stresses work on Medicaid expansion

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Gov. Tom Corbett’s top human services aide says she’ll meet with a federal health care official as she hopes to find a way to expand Medicaid that can get agreement from her boss, the federal government and state lawmakers.

Beverly Mackereth, the acting secretary for the Pennsylvania Department of Public Welfare, said Wednesday that she’s exploring various Medicaid expansion models to see what each would cost. Meanwhile, Mackereth plans to meet next week with a federal Medicaid official.

Corbett, a conservative, is refusing for now to go along with a Medicaid expansion because he says he’s concerned about the cost to Pennsylvania, even though it would largely be federally funded. An expansion would provide health care coverage to hundreds of thousands of uninsured adults.
