Ohio House: process veterans’ claims faster

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio lawmakers want federal officials to reduce the processing time for veterans’ disability claims.

The Ohio House on Wednesday approved a resolution urging President Obama, Congress and the head of the Department of Veterans Affairs to take prompt action to help veterans get needed treatment.

Speaker William Batchelder, a Medina Republican, said in a statement it is “tragic” that many veterans are unable to get the treatment.

The statement says the U.S. Government Accountability Office reports the average length of time for the VA to complete a disability claim increased from 161 days to 260 days between fiscal years 2009 and 2012.

The GAO also says the number of backlogged claims awaiting a decision for more than 125 days has more than tripled since September 2009.
