Party balloon causes power outage in West Reading

READING, Pa. (AP) — A stray party balloon is apparently to blame for a power outage that affected hundreds of customers in an eastern Pennsylvania borough.

A spokeswoman for the utility company Med-Ed says the foil-covered balloon got tangled in some power lines in West Reading around 9:50 a.m. Tuesday, causing them to burn. A spokeswoman for the utility, Karen Baxter, says that knocked out power for about 550 customers for 90 minutes.

Power was eventually restored around 11:15 a.m.
