Beaver Township police said they have arrested several women for prostituting themselves for heroin money who use websites to advertise their services.
Two weeks ago, a woman was arrested for promoting prostitution and other charges at the Liberty Inn next to the Ohio Turnpike interchange. It was the latest in a spree of arrests police have made.
“Different individuals are using a site called Backpage.com and other social networking sites to prostitute themselves,” said Beaver Township Police Lt. Eric Dattilo. “Some of the ads that we would see actually would indicate they are using different hotels in Beaver Township.”
Dattilo said patrolling area hotels is a priority for police. One hotel manager said he watches for suspicious activity and notifies police.
“If we see something happening we will contact them right away or if they contact us we will try and give them as much information as we can,” said Smruti Padula, a general manager of a local hotel, who granted an interview under the condition the hotel not be named.
Dattilo said prostitution is part of a larger problem in the community: the infestation of drugs.
“A lot of the individuals have drug issues, addictions,” Dattilo said. “They need money and they will take that chance to make money to support their addiction.”
