Ohio seasonal warning on safety risks near water

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Ohio health officials are warning about a spike in safety risks near water now that school is out and warmer weather is on its way.

The Ohio Department of Health says a recent analysis of near-drownings involving children across the state show most occur from May-to-August.

Near-drownings reported in June and July in Ohio typically exceed the other 10 months combined.

Last year 29 children and 69 adults drowned in Ohio.

The agency recommends fencing off backyard pools, swimming with a buddy, watching children near water, teaching youngsters early to swim and using approved life jackets.
