Mother of lung transplant girl gives update

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The mother of a 10-year-old girl who received a lung transplant says her daughter is improving.

Janet Murnaghan says on her Facebook page that her daughter Sarah was moved on Wednesday to a traditional ventilator. Murnaghan calls that “a big step” toward being able to wake Sarah from the heavy sedation she’s under after the operation.

Sarah underwent a six-hour operation last week at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia after a judge ordered that organ donation rules should be modified in her case.

The Murnaghan family’s quest to qualify their daughter for an organ transplant using adult lungs spurred public debate over how donor organs are allocated.
