8 horses seized from Pa. keeper cited for cruelty

HOLLSOPPLE, Pa. (AP) — Eight horses have been seized from their keeper in southwestern Pennsylvania, who has been cited for animal cruelty for allegedly not properly feeding or caring for the animals.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for Barry Hostetler, of Hollsopple. The Associated Press could not locate a phone for Hostetler at the address listed on the citations.

Somerset County humane officer Tina Thompson tells the (Somerset) Daily American (http://bit.ly/15mV5sC ) that one malnourished 2-year-old horse weighed just 500 pounds and had bones visible through his coat.

Thompson says five of the horses were being boarded when they were seized, and were not owned by the person cited.

Thompson says one horse at the farm was so ill it had to be euthanized. The farm is located about 60 miles southeast of Pittsburgh.
