When disasters strike, lines of communication are often the first things that stop working, making if more difficult for first responders and victims in need of help.

However, one system that always works during emergencies is Amateur Radio.

This weekend Amateur Radio operators across the Valley gave the public a chance to see just how the system works.

Radio Operators, also known as HAMS, from the 20/9 Radio Amateur Club in Austintown, set up at Austintown Park for 48 hours for a public demonstration during the annual Field Day event.

The public could get an upclose look at the radio equipment and learn more about the emergency system.

The HAMS provide backup communication for agencies such as FEMA and the American Red Cross.

The operators helped during the Boston Marathon, and many other disasters, as well Hurrican Katrina.

“The only communications that there was in and out of new orleans was ham radio operators,” said HAM Radio operator David Mellot. “We went in with portable generators, put up antennas, andd supports like this and we operated until they got communication going back to normal.”

The Valley wasn’t the only area holding public demos. Thousands of amateur radio operators across the country as well as Canada helped public demonstrations this weekend.
