Young athletes in Springfield are braving the heat to brush up on their soccer skills.

The Challenger Sports British Soccer Camp is taking place this week at the soccer fields in New Middletown.

Players from age three to 15 are taking part in the five-day instructional camp. Each day includes foot skills, technical drills, tactical practices, side games and a daily tournament.

Most of the coaches are from Great Britain and spend the week here in the Valley teaching players what they need to know about the sport.

“From the basics right through to tactics and off the field stuff as well like respect, responsibility, integrity” said professional soccer coach Luke Edwards. “Just things that will help them develop through life.”

The Challenger camps take place all over the U.S., with 70 coaches hosting the clinics.
