Police: Squatter set western Pa. duplex fire

ETNA, Pa. (AP) — A squatter who police describe as fascinated with fire has been jailed on charges he set fire to the vacant duplex where he had been living, sending three firefighters to the hospital.

Allegheny County police say two firefighters suffered chest pains while a third broke his ankle fighting the fire in Etna, which was reported shortly before 1:30 a.m. Monday. Their conditions weren’t immediately available.

Online court records don’t list an attorney for the suspect, 21-year-old Alan Erb.

Police say Erb told them he was flicking lit cigarettes at a wall before lighting a blanket on fire and watching it burn. Police say Erb told them he left when the fire became too large for him to extinguish.

Police say Erb told them he didn’t intend for the duplex to burn.
