Ohio mother takes plea in boys’ camping deaths

ZANESVILLE, Ohio (AP) — A mother has pleaded guilty to child endangering and been sentenced to three years in prison in the drowning of her 3-year-old son and disappearance of his 2-year-old brother during an eastern Ohio camping trip.

Monday’s plea agreement and sentencing came less than two weeks after Kasey Klein’s husband, Richard, was acquitted by a jury in Zanesville in the June 2011 deaths of the children in the Muskingum River.

The Kleins had been convicted of involuntary manslaughter and child endangering in 2012 and were sentenced to 12 years each in prison. But the verdicts were overturned by an appeals court that ruled the trials should have been separated.

Prosecutors argued that the Kleins were reckless in camping 25 feet from the river. The 2-year-old’s body was never found.
