APOLLO, Pa. (AP) — A western Pennsylvania newspaper carrier is being credited with saving an elderly man who had fallen inside his home for the second time in four years.
Joe Stango, who is 18, has delivered papers for the (Tarentum) Valley News Dispatch for six years, but had shadowed an older brother on the Kiski Township route since Stango was just 2.
As such, Stango says he notices when something is out of place — like on May 29, when he spotted papers piling up on the doorstep of Robert Betts’ home.
Stango broke through a locked screen door to check on the 81-year-old retired gravedigger, who had fallen and been lying for at least two days without food, dehydrated and delusional.
Stango similarly found Betts lying helpless on his kitchen floor back in 2009.
