Eric Garcetti takes over as Los Angeles mayor

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Eric Garcetti has taken the oath of office to become Los Angeles’ 42nd mayor.

The veteran city councilman took the oath on the City Hall steps Sunday as part of inaugural activities featuring Jimmy Kimmel and the musician Moby.

Officially, he takes over the job leading a sprawling city of nearly 4 million people on Monday, replacing fellow Democrat Antonio Villaraigosa.

The 42-year-old Garcetti has promised to attend to longstanding gripes about potholes and cracked sidewalks while getting the city’s economy moving.

The Ivy Leaguer and Rhodes Scholar was credited with redevelopment in Hollywood while he served on the City Council.
